"Expectation is the bridge to disappointment."

Uncategorized

My dean said that quote above in the beginning of the first semester, and I believe you can find this quote amongst the quotes in A Supplement to My Favorite Quotes.

Man, I just don’t know about this quote. It’s right, but it’s kind of wrong, too. I really like this quote, though. I say this all the time now as an excuse or a reason to not have expectations of certain things.

Operating under this quote can keep you safe, but at the same time, it’s dangerous. Right?

Think about it.

If you don’t expect anything from a situation, you won’t be disappointed. But what happens when you’re okay with people treating you badly because you didn’t expect them to treat you well? Even worse, what happens when you’re satisfied with failure because you didn’t expect success?

I think we should have some sort of standard or expectation for ourselves or when it comes to things that will affect us.

It’s tricky, I guess…and I guess I have nothing else to say at this point.

But, thankfully, this is a “Think on This” post, so I’d like you think about it, and comment below to let me know what you think about this quote.

“Expectation in the bridge to disappointment.”

Thanks for stopping by! See you again soon. =)

One of my favorite quotes is a version of this quote – it goes : "great expectations make frustrated men" I have found that to be mostly true. when I go into situations with no excpetations the experience is much more rewarding than if I do. Then the percentage of dissapointment goes up. still I do have my goals and principles which would never let me feel okay if I am in a sitatuation where people are treating me badly.

(I can go on and on about this 😉

    I agree with you
I love this quote but at the same time Hate it because how can I NOT have expectations. I guess it's a risk. I risk it.
I just feel that if I don't expect the best out of every situation I wouldn't be positive, even if at the end I'm disappointing I guess it's a risk I'm willing to take.

    I like the quote

I heard a sermon on expectations. There are those who go to church not expecting to be moved or changed. They see it as a weekly ritual and don't expect anything from it other than the usual. They don't allow themselves to be moved by simply lacking an expectation from the service.

The Quote is tricky. Often times we do expect things and are disappointed in the end (another cycle in human life). However we shouldn't drop expectations all together. Its basically giving up hope. I heard someone say "hope is all we've got, and were running outta hope, once that's gone, we're gone"

Thanks so much for your insight. And you're right, without hope, humans don't have much left. Take care!

I agree…it's a good but bad quotation. If you have unclear or not very well thought out expectations, or expections that you're not willing to strive toward–well, yes then you are going to walk across and find your self in disappointment! But if you think carefully about your expectation, put forth the effort to realize them, and know how to deal with the ones that don't get fulfilled–well, expectations are necessary for progress. So agreed with you, it's good and bad.
