Words Often Used and Abused: Like

Uncategorized

So today, I’m like gonna like write about another word that’s like used and like abused.

Was that like painful to like read? Yeah. It was bloody painful for me to write!

If that was painful to read, why do we hear “like” being overused all the time and pay no attention to it?

I cannot stand when the word “like” is used as a filler word, even if I’m the one to like use it in that way. It’s worse than “umm.” It’s worse than “uhh.” It’s bloody terrible and annoying.

I’m not exactly sure how this goes down in other countries, but young Americans are sounding like idiots.

“And he was like, ‘Seriously?,’ and I was like, ‘Yeah,’ and he was like, ‘No way,’ and I was like, ‘It’s true!'”

STOP IT. STOP IT NOW.

The sentence should at least have gone like this: “And he said, ‘Seriously?,’ and I said, ‘Yeah,’ and he said, ‘No way,’ and I said, ‘It’s true!'” <—That right there sounds a lot less stupid.

“When we wore the same dress to the dance, she like got mad.”
“I was practically like starving because it was like 3:00pm, and I hadn’t eaten since like noon.”
I’ll let this foolishness slide if the culprits are middle schoolers. I might even give those in high school a pass.
But people have like graduated and entered the semi-real world and real world of college and work, respectively.
“I have to like write this 10-paged paper about like justified war and like whether there is such a thing.”
“This college thing is like hard!”
“I really think this proposal will like get me in good with the boss.”
“This new product will like advance our brand and productivity by like 74%”
NO.

This is ridiculous.
If we continue this foolery, presidential candidates in the year 2052 will say, “I want to be your President because I like have a plan to like better the economy, better our national security, and like better our country.”

That’s pretty much where we’re headed.

Like I know not everyone can like speak like perfect English like all the time; but still…the overuse and abuse is not the way to go.

This was very, very difficult for me to write. Aha!
