I Like Your Style: Jode-Leigh Nembhard

Fashion + Style Interviews

I had the chance to get to know Jode-Leigh a little better this past school year. She is awesome. She’s chic and smart. Thankfully, she was nice enough to let me interview her.

Where are you from?

I was born in Manchester, Jamaica then moved to Toronto, Canada when I was ten years old.
What are you studying/doing for a living?

My major is Pre-Law with a concentration in Political Science and a minor in Business Management.
Any hobbies?

Um, I love to read! I’m also very addicted to Tumblr. Blogging is a huge hobby for me right now. Oh, two years ago, I really got into making head chains and other little DIY projects. That’s something I’ve really enjoyed over the years.

What does style mean to you?

Style, for me, is all about showing myself through clothes. It’s really about being me but using clothes as a way to do so. You can tell a lot about a person by the way they put themselves together.
What words would you use to describe your style?

I think I go through different phases with my style. Right now, I’m really transitioning into a more mature look. So right now, words like feminine, chic, structure, and comfort would describe my style.
Where are your favorite places to shop?

Top Shop, Asos, Ebay (Chinese vendors are the best), H&M, Urban Outfitters, Zara, the thrift store…
Believe it or not, I love me some Target!
Do you have any favorite fashion icons or designers?

In the fashion scene, my favorites are the stylists. I love love Rachel Zoe. She is pure awesomeness. She’s extremely smart. She studied at George Washington, did the whole school thing. But, then she did what she was passionate about. I admire her for that. I really adore Jackie Kennedy’s style! Amazing! I’m an old soul! I love a lot of style icons from the ’60s. They were just so classy! Love it! On the flip side, I’m really into Rihanna. Hands down, her style is amazing! She’s not always the classiest, but I’m starting to get into the ’90s vibe, and I think she executes that well. Also, I’m really into Lana Del Rey. I really love how she is bringing vintage back!
With regard to your style, where do you get your inspiration?

I know it’s probably cliché to say, but honestly, I’m inspired by everything around me. Then, I just trust my instincts and try to embody what I’m inspired by in my style.
Is there one article of clothing you couldn’t live without?

Shoes. I couldn’t live without shoes. Shoes compliments and finishes an outfit. Got to have the right shoes.
Jode-Leigh and two of her friends have a blog called Purple Lipstick. Be sure to check it out at kissmepurple.blogspot.com. Tell them Nia sent you!
Thanks for letting me feature you, Jode-Leigh!
