I Like Your Style: Sarah Garner

I am from Lansing, Michigan. I grew up here and then went to college in downtown Lansing. It’s a wonderful place to live because you have the energy of the capital city and the inspiration of MSU’s college town. The city is filled with students from all over the world and there’s always something going on.

I am a graphic designer at a marketing firm in downtown Lansing. I have a degree in graphic communication and I’m currently working on a degree in business.

It all depends on what I’m into and what I’m going through at that time in my life. My interests or hobbies will change with the seasons. In general, I’m a huge music person and that’ll never change. Growing up, my sisters and I were always playing the piano. As a result, I must have music playing whenever I’m doing anything – working, designing, dishes, etc. Finding new music and reading about artists is something I always enjoy. I also like to take time to write and journal about what it’s interesting in my life. I have collections of journals, magazine clippings, Bible scripture, and photos that I’ve collected over the years.

Style is certain colors and items that you gravitate towards. Style and the way you dress yourself is an art form. It takes time to think about what looks good together and what suits your body. It is also fun and allows me to play with colors, my features, and my creativity.

Most of my clothes are from resale stores like Plato’s Closet and thrift stores. I’m very big into reusing clothing and watching how much money I’m spending on clothes. I will occasionally pick up a few items from Forever 21 or Target. My favorite labels to look for at resale stores are J. Crew, H&M, and Express. However, I usually try to avoid focusing on the labels and search for items that catch my eye, look good on my body type, and can be a versatile piece in my wardrobe.

There are several icons I look to for fashion. Audrey Hepburn is my classic icon. I appreciate the simple and classic pieces she wore. Jackie Kennedy’s use of color and elegance has always inspired me as well. I consider Farrah Fawcett to be an all-American beauty and look to her for inspiration in the glow she had and the way she dressed her body. Currently, I look to Blake Lively and the looks she creates. Blake balances a classic, American wardrobe along with some fun elements and fashion choices.

I like to consider what is “in style” at the moment. It’s good to be inspired from one another’s fashion choices. However, my inspiration comes from my desire to keep a classic wardrobe and try new things as well. I want to wear clothing that’s comfortable and feels like me with the occasional addition of trying something new. I gain a lot of inspiration from surfing Tumblr and seeing what ladies all over America are wearing. Inspiration comes locally when I’m in downtown Lansing or Michigan State campus. The people on the streets provide me with the most inspiration because their fashion is often very practical and daring. From their choices, I like to pick out elements I can apply to my own wardrobe.

Jeans! I couldn’t live without them! They are the foundation of every outfit. A close second is my dark blue blazer. I got it at a thrift store and I’ve been obsessed with it since I first tried it on!

Confidence and an attitude that radiates grace is essential to being a person that others will gravitate to. The qualities of your soul will outshine your clothing any day. It is important to understand that your style is simply an art form. It’s a way to be creative comparable to an artist painting on a canvas. Don’t be overwhelmed and focused on what the trends are or always having that standout outfit. Having this focus takes the fun out of fashion. Allow yourself to dress the way you want and like the things you like regardless of what others might be saying. Remember that your clothing is simply clothing, it won’t matter in a hundred years. Your legacy and the way you treat people is what matters.
