My song of the month is “La La Latch” by Pentatonix. The song is on Pentatonix’s EP PTX Vol. III, and it’s a mashup of “La La La” by Naughty Boy and “Latch” by Disclosure. The common denominator these two songs have is Sam Smith, as the vocalist features on both tracks.
First off, Pentatonix, currently one of my favorite bands, is an a cappella group (props), and I think they did a really good job with this cover. Pentatonix captured Smith’s vocal stylings, but put their own flavor on it and managed to find the perfect balance between the two songs. The group also toyed with minimalism a little bit, and that minimalism allowed for some moments in the song to be more noticeable. Sometimes, there were no background parts – just the solo, bass, and drums. Sometimes, you hear octaves. There is ear candy all throughout the song, and it is so fun to listen to this dope mashup.
