Song of the Month: “Glory” by Common and John Legend

Music

My song of the month is “Glory” by Common and John Legend. Common is a hip-hop artist and Legend is a singer-songwriter, and the two of them collaborated on “Glory,” the theme song for the 2014 movie Selma.

I am all here for this song, and I thought it’d be appropriate to share in light of Black History Month and the attention the song has received. The lyrics essentially speak on the longing for social justice, which is still relevant today. The duo has performed the song at a number of events, most recently the Academy Awards, where the song won an Oscar for Original Song. Many people were crying after their moving performance, and during their acceptance speech, Common and Legend took the opportunity to further remind people that “Selma is now because the struggle for justice is right now.”

Enjoy.
