In Honor of Clay York

Uncategorized

Today, I mourn the loss of a dear friend named Clay. I met Clay over three years ago in Los Angeles, California. He was such a beautiful soul. He was full of effervescence, and he gave life and positive energy to everybody around him. Clay was “groomed for greatness,” as his father puts it. He was ready to change the world and inspired others to do the same.

It’s crazy how the events of life play out. Clay just graduated from Texas Christian University last year. This year, he was studying dance at the Ailey School. In my short time of knowing him, I’d accumulated a number of fond memories of Clay. I was in such a state of shock when I heard of his passing. I didn’t know what to think.

This was a wake-up call for me – in more than one way. If you don’t feel like reading, just skip to the end.

First, I was reminded of the need to live each day as if it is my last, simply because I’ll never know when my last day will be. Clay lived life to the fullest. He was in the midst of fulfilling his dreams.

We should give every day our all. We should be strong. We should be optimistic. We should think of the best, work for the best, and expect the best. We should work to make our dreams come true. We should work to improve ourselves. We should leave all of ourselves of life’s stage. We should do all that we can – every day. Nothing withheld. Nothing left undone. No regrets.
I was also reminded of the influence we as people have on fellow humans. Everyone that knew Clay, as far as I know, loved Clay. His Facebook page is flooded with photos, videos, and statuses from friends. As I said, he gave life and positive energy to everyone around him, and you can see that he was loved by many.
I’d like to have the same affect on others. I’d like to spread happiness and joy. I’d like to greet every one with a smile. I’d like to let my light shine and encourage others to do the same. I’d like people to be better off after having met me. I want to inspire. We should all want to inspire. We should all want to have a positive impact on the world.
Finally, I was reminded of giving people flowers while they can smell them. If you love someone, tell him/her. If you appreciate someone, tell him/her. So often, people regret leaving things unsaid. Sometimes, people wish they would’ve given or asked for forgiveness. Sometimes, people didn’t express how much they loved and appreciated others. I wonder how different some lives would be had we just said whatever we needed to say to whomever we needed to tell.

For those who skipped…
1. Live each day to the fullest. Do all that you can and give all that you can to every thing and every one. Live vehemently. You never know which moment will be your last. Carpe the hell out of each diem.

2. Spread positivity. You never know how your actions will affect people. Spread joy. Have a liberating influence on others. Inspire people to be better people.

3. Tell people how you feel while you can. Let your loved ones know NOW that you love them. You won’t regret it. If they already know, tell them again. I don’t think you can ever say it enough.

I recognize that this wasn’t my most eloquent post. I’m still in disbelief, waiting for someone to call me to tell me that Clay is actually still alive. Anyway, in 2014, I’d like you all to join me in living each day to the fullest, spreading positivity and inspiration, and telling people how we feel.

Rest in peace, Clay York. Thank you for being so full of life and love. I am very fortunate to have known you, and I wish you knew how much I loved and appreciated you. I hope to be more like you – starting today.
