Double Standards: Sex

Uncategorized

I think it’s about time I slowly stepped into some controversial, or at least debatable, topics. I figured I should start with something light. Here it goes.

I wanted to attack some of the double standards that have had such a strong bearing on our society. Old ones and new ones. Rich ones and poor ones. Black ones and white ones and Latin ones and Asian ones and so on.

But today, I wanted to tackle a gender related one. Sex.

What. Is with that? Like seriously?

A guy has a lot of sex? He’s the man. A girl has a lot of sex? She’s a slut. What? I keep looking for an explanation. The most common one I get?

If a key opens several locks, it’s a master key. But if a lock is opened by several keys, it’s a crappy lock.

Bull.

Somehow this explanation has become a modern-day proverb and the double standard is some sort of dogma.

I will admit that whoever said this first did a beautiful job of metaphorically explaining his promiscuous ways, but it’s not enough for me.

Shouldn’t a dirty spoon be treated like a dirty bowl*? You don’t see a dirty spoon getting high-fived and placed in a trophy case while the bowl is in the dishwasher. No. You throw the spoon in the dishwasher, too.

We see it everywhere – books, television, movies, and real life. A guy can have sex with ten girls and be viewed as some sort of Casanova while a girl who has had sex with ten guys is viewed as a Jezebel. Hell, a girl could have sex with seven guys, which is fewer than ten, and still be forced to wear a scarlet “A” on her dress. It’s not fair.

And that’s not all.

For some reason, how quickly a woman removes her clothing alludes to how high she is on the tramp scale. What? Doesn’t the man get undressed just as quickly, if not quicker? Why isn’t he judged like a tramp.. but rather a king?

It seems that there is also a notion that birth control is the woman’s responsibility.

Why? Is it because women display the most recognizable effect of sexual relations? A baby? Doesn’t it take two to make a thing go right…? Ha. And can’t both parties suffer the more unpleasant consequences of sex? STIs*?

Is there a double standard because many men will eventually lose interest after sex while many women will become attached? Isn’t that an overgeneralization? I know of women who’ve moved on to the next one after hooking up while the men are hopelessly waiting for their texts to be returned. Hmm…

Isn’t sex enjoyable for both genders? Is it too much to say that women want and like sex just as much as men do? If the desire is equal, then why is the judgement skewed? If a man and a woman’s numbers are the same, why is the criticism so harshly biased against the latter? I simply don’t think one gender should be treated like royalty while the other gender is in the peasant class. That simply doesn’t make sense.

I know this whole post is primarily made up of questions, but I’m really just confused. This is seriously one of the most illogical double standards out there.

“You can’t turn a whore into a housewife.” Well, I say you can’t turn a whore into a husband either. Men are trollops, too.

But then again, I’m a virgin. What would I know?

*Seriously, no pun intended.
*STI = Sexually Transmitted Infections; no longer called Sexually Transmitted Diseases.
