Photographer’s Spotlight: Richard Calmes – “Out There”

Art

Richard Calmes is one of my favorite dance photographers.

Here’s some background on Mr. Calmes for the new readers who didn’t his first feature.

From richardcalmes.com:

“Richard Calmes became a dance photographer as a result of his initially being an artist, an architect, and an athlete as well as a husband and father. All of these identities have come together in his life preparing him to capture ‘bursts of beauty’ with a depth of understanding.

Midlife, he discovered inspiration for photography through taking his daughter to dance classes. Richard soon found himself watching classes, rehearsals, and performances with his architect’s eye and his artist’s appreciation for form and beauty. His athlete’s respect for the extreme athleticism of dance pushed him further into a desire to record dancers in all aspects of their lives.

Richard focuses his camera on four areas of the life of a dancer: Class and Rehearsal, Performance, Studio Portraits, and ‘Out There.'”

Last time, I showed you twenty of my favorite studio portraits. Today, I’m focusing on his “Out There” collection. The first two photos you’ll see are the first two photos of his that I saw and fell in love with. You may or may not recognize them from previous “Beautiful People. Beautiful Things.” features.

It’s purely amazing to see the extraordinary beauty of dancers in ordinary people. Richard Calmes captured these moments of beauty exceptionally well. Do you agree?
