Song of the Month: “Summertime” by DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince

My song of the month is “Summertime” by DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince. I mean, obviously. We’re closing up July, the middle summer, and this GRAMMY award-winning song fits perfectly. “Summertime” was released in 1991 as the lead single of the duo’s fourth album, Homebase.

A classic 90s hip-hop track, “Summertime” samples Kool & the Gang’s “Summer Madness.” The groove starts right away, and it’s easy to jam to the song wherever – in your ear, in your room, at a pool party, or in your car. So, as The Fresh Prince says, “Put your car on cruise and lay back ’cause this is summertime.”
