I’ve been stifled for the past several months.
School and clubs (and hopefully work) sate stifling the art. The things in which I take the most joy are suffering because of my demanding college experience.
Because of my academic “distraction,” NIA SPEAKS is no longer in its prime, Our Beautiful People isn’t flowing the way I would’ve wished, creative writing has been paused, and my musical growth has been stunted.
It’s difficult to take time to put together a good blog post when I have to put together a presentation instead. It’s difficult to take time to find strangers to photograph and interview when I have to prepare for an NAACP meeting. It’s difficult to take time to unleash my creative thoughts on paper when I have a research paper that’s due. It’s difficult to take time to practice the violin and piano when I have to study for an exam.
It’s difficult.
Yesterday, I drew my first colored portrait. I’m not entirely pleased with it, but I was glad to at least take a moment for art.

With the exception of this drawing, my only constant artistic outlets are clothing, Instagram faux-tography, and music listening.

While we’re on the subject of Tori Kelly, I must say that I am OBSESSED with her new EP. Foreword was just released on 22 October, and I am in love. The songs are SO pertinent to me! I’ve been a fan of Tori’s since last year, and I’m glad that’s she’s doing so well. Also, in light of artistry, I started working on a project that is very much related to this EP. If it comes to fruition, I’ll keep you posted!

So anyway, that’s life for me right now. Stifled. AND I’m trying to find a job. Crazy. Anyway, I hope to have three musical projects come to life, I hope to submit at least one story to a magazine, I hope to grow the Our Beautiful People brand, and I hope return to really good NIA SPEAKS posts.
God willing, I’ll do (at least some of) this before Christmas break. Henry Ford said, “You can’t build a reputation on what you’re going to do.” I hope I can follow through with these hopes.
I want to follow through. For the art.
