The Optimist Creed: Article 8

Uncategorized

I recently realized that it’s been quite some time since I last broke down an article from The Optimist Creed, so here we go. I’ll be analyzing the eighth article. The creed is as follows…

Promise yourself…
To be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind.

To talk health, happiness and prosperity to every person you meet.

To make all your friends feel that there is something in them.

To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true.

To think only of the best, to work only for the best, and to expect only the best.

To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own.

To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future.

To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile.

To give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others.

To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear, and too happy to permit the presence of trouble.

For some reason, I have a problem with this article. I agree with it, but I have a difficult time doing it. As Mia Thermopolis said in The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, “The concept is grasped. The execution is a little elusive.”
It’s difficult to “wear a cheeful countenance at all times.” …It is for me anyway. I mean.. Most times, I’m happy, but my normal face is not endearing, I guess. I don’t smile 24/7 because my cheeks would hurt.
But I see why this article is important. A cheerful countenance brings life. Cheer brings life to you and others. Smiling at people can literally make their day.
That’s all I really have to say about it all. Be cheerful. Keep smiling. I’ll work on it, too.
