That's a good point but I think that the problem nowadays is that good manners has gotten in the way of discovering the truth sometimes. Not necessarily in this situation but say someone suspected that another someone wasn't telling the truth. If they questioned the suspicious person people might say that questioning someone isn't polite. Because of that, the questions would stop and once again good manners would trump honesty.
