For those of you not familiar with my The Book of Questions feature, I select a question from The Book of Questions by Gregory Stock, Ph.D., write my response, and ask for your response.
QUESTION 60:
Would you add one year to your life if it meant taking one year from the life of someone in the world selected at random? Would it matter if you were told whose life you had shortened?
MY RESPONSE:
No, I wouldn’t. A year could be a lot to give to someone, but it also could be a lot to take from someone. I couldn’t possibly take that much from a stranger.
Yes, it would matter to me if I were told whose life I’d shortened. It would probably mess me up emotionally.
