I Like Your Style: Maya McHenry

Fashion + Style Interviews

I met Maya this summer in Los Angeles. I don’t remember exactly what she was wearing, with the exception of a pair of black Docs, but I knew right away that she was a fashionista. This LA-bred beauty is kind, hilarious, and fabulous. I’m glad I was able to meet and get to know Maya this summer; and she was nice enough to let you get to know her a little bit via this interview.

What are you studying/doing for a living?

I’m a model at LA Models, but I’m studying fashion photography at Parsons.
Any hobbies?

Modeling, photography, and horseback riding.
What does style mean to you?

Style is a way for me to really express myself. I’ve always seen that it’s a way for people to get inspired from what you’re wearing and help them figure out what they feel most comfortable wearing. My roommate recently said to me, “Maya, I love your style and use your photos that you post on Instagram of your different outfits to help figure out what I’m wearing the next day.”
What words would you use to describe your style?

Edgy, chic.
Where are your favorite places to shop?

Pixie Market, Barneys New York, Zara, Open Ceremony, Topshop.
Do you have any favorite fashion icons or designers?

Alexander Wang, Rachel Zoe, Nicole Richie.
With regard to your style, where do you get your inspiration?

Magazines, street fashion blogs, and just growing up around the fashion world.
Is there one article of clothing you couldn’t live without?

Alexander Wang and Chanel.
Any life advice, parting words, or final thoughts?

If you ever want to be in fashion, the most important thing to know is to stand out. You want someone to look at your photograph, clothing line, or styling and say, for example, “Maya McHenry styled that.” Also, always look out for YOU. This world is too competitive to do favors all the time, but stay humble.

Thank you for the interview, Maya! I hope you’re having the time of your life at Parsons! Much love.
